The Miniature Schnauzer is small terrier breed that requires plenty of exercise. This native of Germany is an obedient family member who is a choice for allergy sufferers.


Physical Characteristics

  • Small, strong, box-shaped build
  • Strong, rectangular muzzle with pronounced beard and black nose
  • Hard, bristly topcoat comes in black/silver, salt/pepper and solid black; soft undercoat
  • Tail is usually docked
  • Height: 12-14 inches
  • Weight: 13-15 pounds
  • Average lifespan: 14 years

Temperament

  • Loving, intelligent, affectionate, energetic, obedient, playful
  • Interaction with people: Good with children; enjoys feeling part of the human family
  • Interaction with animals: Good with other dogs
  • Training: Easily trained; needs to be socialized with other dogs as a puppy
  • Bark: May be vocal
  • Protection: Good watch dog

  • OK for apartments; ideal city dogs
  • Needs long daily walks

Grooming

  • Light shedder; considered hypoallergenic
  • Brush daily to prevent matting

Brief History

  • Originally from Germany
  • Developed in the late 19th century
  • While a cross between the Standard Schnauzer, Affenpinscher and possibly the Poodle
  • Excellent mouse trapper, hunter, tracker and watchdog
